Coldplay knocked it out of the park on the first night of their four sold-out gigs at Croke Park.

Taking notes from the Harry Styles play book, Chris Martin sent the crowd wild when he used a cupla focail to kick off the night.

His greeting of ‘Céad mile fáilte, go Croke Pairc ‘and added,’Tá áthas orainn anseo I Croke Pairc’ earned him more than a few brownie points with his adoring Irish fans.

There were poignant moments too, as he paid tribute to Irish music legends Sinéad O’Connor, Dolores O’Riordan and Shane MacGowan.

Martin made a point of praising the Irish crowd for their incredible support.

He said playing Croke Park was ‘a privilege’, adding, ‘We played 160 shows before today and I thought I was experienced, but I really don’t know how to handle a crowd this wonderful.’

The first song of the night was Music of the Spheres, followed byHigher Power,Adventure of a Lifetime,Paradise,The Scientist,Viva la Vidaand their debut hitYellow.

It was the first time the band had played in Ireland in seven years and the Irish crowd were making the most of their triumphant return.

On Wednesday evening, lead singer Chris made a surprise appearance on Grafton Street for an impromptu performance of the new hit WE PRAY.

The singer drew a huge crowd as he performed the new single with UK rapperLittle Simz, Nigerian Afrobeats superstar Burna Boy, Palestinian-Chilean R&B phenomenon Elyanna and chart-topping Argentine TINI.

The group played the song three times together before they departed for the night.

Martin said: ‘I thought it would be quiet but the people of Dublin gave us the best video I’ve ever seen.”

At one point during the show Martin stopped mid song and said: ‘Goodnight, goodbye . . . we gotta go. Bono wants his stage back . . . enjoy Oasis.’

He returned to the stage moments later laughing.
