Continued from Page 1A The once constant thunder of artillery barrages has been halted with so many troops moving inside the city's narrow alleys.

U.S. and Iraqi forces have surrounded a mosque inside the city that was used as an arms depot and insurgent meeting point, the BBC reported. Col. Michael Formica, commander of the 1st Cavalry Division's 2nd Brigade, said today that a security cordon around the city will be tightened to ensure insurgents dressed in civilian clothing don't slip out. "My concern now is only one not to allow any enemy to escape.

As we tighten the noose around him, he will move to escape to fight another day. I do not want these guys to get out of here. I want them killed or captured as they flee," he said. Overnight the skies over Fallujah lit up with flashes of air and artillery barrages as American forces laid siege to the city that had become the major sanctuary for Islamic extremists who fought Marines to a standstill last April. A U.S.

military spokesman estimated that 42 insurgents were killed across the city in bombardmenty and skirmishes before the main assault began Monday. In other veterans news, 125 new granite bricks from the supplier for the Seymour monument were being installed at the monument site at Gaiser Park beginning Monday. Monument committee members said they hoped to have all bricks installed before Thursday's program. A few bricks that had misspellings are still being corrected. Fettig said the public still may order bricks to be placed at the monument by picking up a form at either City Hall in Seymour or the Seymour VFW post. Completed forms may be sent to Veterans Memorial, P.O.

Box 1052, Seymour, IN The initial ground assault into Fallujah's northeastern Askari neighborhood and Jolan neighborhood was made by U.S. Army tanks and Humvees. U.S. Marines went up to the edge of the city and secured the area, then armored vehicles crushed the barriers and pushed into the city, with the Marines following. A reporter at a U.S.

camp near the city, reported seeing orange explosions lighting up the district's palm trees, minarets and dusty roofs, and a fire burning on the city's edge. A U.S. jet fired an air-toground missile at a building late Monday from which U.S. and Iraqi forces had taken fire, the U.S. command said.

The building was destroyed. U.S. troops cut off electricity to the city, and most private generators were not working. Residents said they were without running water and were worried about food shortages because most shops in the city have been closed for the past two days. Piece HENDRICKSVILLE (AP) Mitch Daniels began a three-day tour of Indiana on Monday, exchanging hugs and handshakes at some of the favorite places he visited during his successful campaign for governor.

"Everybody here who we met on our previous trips or who was a little part of our success last week, we are eternally grateful," Daniels told dozens of people crammed inside Rosie's Diner in Hendricksville, a small community about 10 miles west of Bloomington. "There are people in this room who put me up overnight, there are people who fed me, and everybody means a lot to us." The feeling was mutual for Rose Bastin. In a way, she said, Daniels had put Hendricksville and her diner on the map. "Best thing that ever happened to us," she said as a waitress, weaving around supporters and reporters, tried to serve the crowd. "I hoped he would win, but I didn't think he'd come back again." Daniels traveled the state relentlessly over 14 months, visiting each of 92 counties at least three times and putting more than 85,000 miles on the donated recreational vehicle he called "RV One." He had said that every city and town deserved to be part of a "comeback" he promised to lead.

He said Monday that he would not forget about the little places after he is sworn in as governor in January, nor spend all his time in Indianapolis. It was a pledge he first renewed at Charlie McDonald's diner in Acton, a small community in the southeastern corner of Marion County. "It's in those places that we learned so much and met so many friends, and we don't intend to quit that," Daniels said. More than 100 people showed up to greet him, including McDonald. He said he had never voted, and didn't last week, but Daniels stopped at his diner during the campaign and he liked him.

Daniels liked the place so much, he filmed part of a television commercial there. "A lot of these people are Democrats who changed over out here," McDonald said. When asked why, McDonald smiled and said, "Mainly because I told them he was a hell of a nice guy." Sue A. Pogue Sue A. Pogue, 69, Brown- dence.
